Moving from digital to analog is like learning photography in reverse. It's a process of returning to the roots of photography, the original format from which digital photography emerged. In an era where technology has evolved to become smarter, faster, and more compact, digital photography offers convenience and accessibility. With huge storage and compact devices, photographers can capture countless images at minimal cost. However, this abundance often leads to a constant pursuit of perfection, with photographers spending much of their time behind the lens in search of the perfect shot.
Film photography, on the other hand, offers a contrast. It involves fewer shots, requires more time and patience, and comes at a higher cost. Yet, what sets film photography apart is the invaluable learning experience it provides. Through the process of shooting film, photographers gain a deeper understanding of timing, momentum, and imperfection—the very elements that lend each photograph its unique character and personal touch. What I learnt was that embracing the nuances of film photography, you can develop a heightened appreciation for the art form, creating a deeper connection with your own work.
As my knowledge and skills in film photography expanded, so too did my passion for the craft. To document my journey and showcase my evolving style, I launched an Instagram account dedicated to sharing my work. This platform served as an invaluable archive, allowing me to track my progress over time while refining my own style.
As I continued to grow my knowledge, I embarked on a small-scale project titled One From The Roll, inspired by the process of film photography. I carefully curated a selection of my favourite images and offered them for sale, each print representing a unique and exclusive image captured from a roll of film. This concept of "one from the roll" ensured that each purchaser owned a one-of-a-kind version of the photograph.
To enhance the project, I created a small brand identity and developed a dedicated website, which I used to elevate the project's presence. It provided a polished platform to showcase my work and engage with potential buyers.
As I took a photo, rewound the roll, sent it for development, made edits in post, printed it and packaged it up, the whole process of learning film photography felt worth it. Each task required careful attention and dedication, contributing to a sense of fulfilment and pride in the final product. The meticulousness of the process evident in each packaged photograph, with a sense of craftsmanship and uniqueness that is often absent in digital photography.
What began as a simple interest in film photography turned into a learning experience that surpassed the process of photography itself. Alongside expanding my knowledge of photographic techniques, the journey enriched my understanding of the intricacies involved in the print and business processes. These newfound skills and insights will undoubtedly prove invaluable as I continue to pursue my passion for photography and explore opportunities in the future.
